Grade 7 MYP Language & Literatue

'It's a Kind of Magic' investigates how fantastical people, places and things in fiction can represent realistic themes and important issues from our own world. In this unit we explore the relationship between the reality and fantasy in an attempt to understand how fiction can help us come to a better understanding of the world.

We will examine the genres of magical realism and fantasy through a variety of texts. As a class, we will read the novel Skellig (David Almond, 2000) and build on the work we began on symbolism in 'Scraps of Me', by analysing motifs and metaphors, and exploring how these underpin real world themes. We will also study a selection of poetry by William Blake, all of which feature in Skellig, to aid our investigation into the effect of rich and complex symbolism. Learners are also expected to independently read another novel from the wider reading list

Learners will create a number of assessment pieces throughout the unit, including their own narrative writing, and a fantastical character design that represents a real world theme of their choosing.
